  • You know the colour you want.

You can see it clearly in your mind.

    But then you start mixing.

And somehow, what ends up on your palette is not what you imagined.

It comes out too dull, too muddy, too flat.

So you add a little more of this.

Then a little more of that.

And before long, the colour is even further away from where you wanted it to be.

The excitement you felt when you sat down to paint begins to disappear.

There are too many paints. Too many possible combinations. Too many things you feel you should already know.

You become overwhelmed and start doubting yourself.

So you set your painting aside for another time, abandoning it halfway and believing you don't have what it takes to progress..

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

In fact, colour mixing is one of the biggest frustrations artists face.

Because colour mixing is not something you are supposed to instinctively know.

    It is a skill.

And once somebody explains how colour actually works, it becomes far less mysterious.

  • Colour Mixing with Jo Barnard

This Colour Mixing Course will help you understand what is happening on your palette, so you can make more deliberate colour choices instead of relying on trial and error.

Across seven short, easy-to-follow tutorials, I will show you how to mix a wide range of beautiful colours from a deliberately limited palette.

You will learn not only what to mix, but why it works, and what to do when the colour you create is not quite right.

This is not about memorising complicated colour theory. It is about giving you practical knowledge you can use every time you paint.

This course will teach you how to:

    • Mix secondary and tertiary colours from three chosen primary colours.
    • Know the difference between saturated and desaturated colours
    • Adjust a colour when it is too bright, too flat, too warm or too cool
    • Create a wide range of tints, tones, shades and neutrals
    • Recognise the difference between warm and cool colours
    • Mix the most vibrant colours possible
    • Choose colours that work beautifully together
    • Create greater colour harmony across an entire painting
  • Colour harmony is often the missing piece

Have you ever looked at a finished painting and felt that something was not quite right?

The individual colours may be attractive.

    The subject may work.

    The composition may be fine.

And yet the painting feels slightly restless, disconnected or unresolved.

Often, the missing piece is colour harmony.

Colour harmony is what helps the different parts of a painting feel as though they belong together.

It can make even a simple painting feel thoughtful, balanced and alive.

It is not a special gift reserved for naturally talented artists.

It is something you can learn to recognise and create.

Once you understand it, you can begin choosing and mixing colours with much more intention.

Who is Jo Barnard?

I'm Jo, an artist, therapist and life coach who blends many years of skills and experience to support and encourage a growing community of fellow artists.

Together, we cultivate a space for play, exploration, and imagination. I share tools, techniques, and practices too whilst encouraging the freedom of self-expression and a healthy mindset.

I believe every person’s experience of art and life is unique to them, and we get to choose how to respond to both, one step, mark or brush stroke at a time.
